What is Google Hangouts?

  • Google Hangouts is the messenger service from Google. With Hangouts, you can write messages, make phone calls and have video chats.
  • The messenger is integrated into several Google services. Among other things, you can use Hangouts in Gmail, on Google Plus and in the Chrome browser.
  • Google Hangouts can also be used like WhatsApp on your smartphone. Simply download Hangouts for iOS or Hangouts for Android. If your chat partner does not have a Google account, the messages will be sent as SMS.
  • With the Hangout on Air feature, you can record a video conversation with your friends and then share it on Google Plus and YouTube. With Hangout on Air, you can also film just yourself with your webcam.

How Google Hangouts works

If you want to use Google Hangouts, you only need your Google Account to log in. If you don’t have an account yet, you can create one for free

  • Your friends from Google Mail, Google Plus and all other contacts are already in your friends list. You can simply write to them or even call them.
  • With Hangouts, phone calls are made over the Internet. If you call a contact directly, the call is free of charge. As in Skype, you also have the option of dialling real mobile and landline numbers. For example, a call to a German landline costs 1 cent per minute.
