Funny Christmas movies: The best comedies for Christmas

by Pramith

There are countless funny Christmas movies. For many, they are an integral part of the Christmas season. We have picked out classics and new releases

Funny Christmas movies: “Kevin Alone at Home” is the classic par excellence

What would the Christmas season be without funny Christmas movies to sweeten an uncomfortable winter afternoon or evening? The choice is huge, but among the funniest and most beautiful films are still real classics.

  • “Schöne Bescherung” (1989): In this classic Christmas comedy, a family man goes crazy during what is actually the most contemplative time of the year. Everything that can go wrong goes wrong. The absurd situation comedy leaves hardly a dry eye in the house. If you like it over-the-top and exaggerated, you’ve come to the right place.
  • “Kevin – Home Alone” (1990): Little Kevin (Macaulay Culkin) was actually supposed to fly off on Christmas vacation with his large and sometimes annoying family. But due to an oversight, the family leaves without him – and only realizes it once they are in the clouds on the plane. Kevin fends for himself at home and also manages to put two rather stupid burglars to flight with a lot of wit and ideas. If you can’t get enough of Kevin, you can watch part two “Kevin alone in New York” straight afterwards. The Kevin series is undoubtedly one of the best Christmas films
  • “Promises are promises”(1996): Arnold Schwarzenegger can do more than just play the taciturn Terminator. In this family comedy, he has to prove his qualities as a father. Just before Christmas Eve, his son wants an action figure that is out of stock almost everywhere. A crazy race against time begins. This action-packed comedy is fun for the whole family
  • “Santa Clause: A Merry Christmas” (1994): In the 1990s and early 2000s, Tim Allen was a guarantee for safe gags. As the clumsy and lovable family man Scott, he is unceremoniously appointed as Santa’s substitute after an accident. His job is to save Christmas, which leads from one bizarre situation to the next. If you like, you can then watch parts two and three of the Santa Claus series

Modern Christmas comedies

In the 2000s and 2010s, too, Christmas films were repeatedly released that exercised our laughter muscles. These include a classic by John Grisham.

  • Crazy Christmas” (2004): This Christmas comedy is based on Grisham’s novella “The Feast”. Here, too, Tim Allen shines as snooty average American Luther, who wants to skip Christmas with his wife Nora (Jamie Lee Curtis). But then their daughter, who lives abroad, announces her arrival – and the chaos is perfect.
  • “Die highligen drei Könige” (2015): This Christmas movie is not very contemplative, but very funny. The mix of the already funny films “Hangover” and “Love Actually” tells the story of three childhood friends (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen and Anthony Mackie) who celebrate Christmas in a very merry way year after year.
  • “Every Year Again – Christmas with the Coopers” (2015): This lively Christmas movie shows a Christmas celebration within the Coopers’ family circle. The extended family tries more or less successfully to keep minor and major crises away from the family during the Christmas holidays. The result: soon everything in the family goes haywire
  • “My Love, Our Family and Me” (2008): Brad (Vince Vaughn) and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) want to spend a romantic Christmas together in the warmth. But things turn out differently than they had hoped and the couple find themselves in the middle of family chaos.
