Uruk-hai: All about the Isengard Orcs from Lord of the Rings

by Corinna

The Uruk-hai, also known as Uruks, are a particularly strong orc race from the Tolkien universe of Lord of the Rings. The race is possibly a cross between Orc and Bilwissmen or corrupted Men and Elves.

These are Uruk-hai

The Uruk-hai from Tolkien’s story “Lord of the Rings” are also called the Great Orcs.

  • Their exact origin is not known. There are theories, however, that they are descended either from orcs and bilwits or from elves and corrupted humans.
  • They were originally bred by Sauron, but were later also used by the evil wizard Saruman in the battle for the Ring.
  • Unlike other Orc races, Saruman’s Uruk-hai have the great advantage of being able to move freely in daylight without taking damage.
  • The Uruks are just under two metres tall and thus superior to the other Orcs in both size and strength. For this reason they are not only used as simple soldiers.
  • Often they are commanders or captains leading units composed of ordinary Orcs.

The role of the Uruks in the films

The Uruks were used as soldiers in all the great Ring Wars of Middle Earth.

  • The Orc army that attacks Rohan’s people in the Battle of Helm’s Deep is composed only of Uruk-hai.
  • The appearance of the Uruk-hai in the films most closely resembles Tolkien’s descriptions of Orcs in his books.
  • In the films, the Uruk-hai are portrayed as physically superior to humans. In return, they are portrayed as much dumber than how it is described in the books.
  • In addition to the Uruks of Isengard, there are also Uruks of Mordor.
  • The only difference between the two Uruk-hai peoples is that they have a slightly different skin tone and style of dress.
