Canceling Your O2 Contract: How to Terminate Your Cell Phone Contract

by Flo

With O2, you can cancel your contract in several ways. We’ll show you the options and provide a cancellation letter for download.

Canceling Your O2 Cell Phone Contract: Methods, Deadlines, and Conditions

At O2, you can find all the information you need about canceling your contract in your “My O2” customer account. You can also find details on cancellation deadlines and conditions in the comprehensive FAQs. As is often the case with 24-month contracts, a minimum term of usually 24 months applies here as well.

  • If your contract was automatically renewed after the minimum contract term expired, the Telecommunications Act (TKG) reform effective December 1, 2021, allows for cancellation with one month’s notice .
  • Some older plans still stipulate a standard notice period of three months before they renew. This corresponds to the previous standard.
  • o2 itself points out that after the minimum contract term expires, the contract can be terminated with only one month’s notice.
  • By phone: You can initiate the cancellation by phone. Example number: 040 51 90 06 642. However, please check the current number and availability on the o2 website.
  • By mail or fax: Send the cancellation letter to: Telefónica Germany GmbH & Co. OHG, Customer Service, 90345 Nuremberg, or by fax to, for example, 01805 571766.
  • Online: In your “My o2” account or in the app, you can often mark the cancellation (“Mark cancellation”) and then confirm it by phone if necessary.
  • Notes on the contract term: In your original contract, the minimum contract term may be 24 months. If the cancellation deadline is missed, the contract is usually extended automatically—however, since the TKG reform, this is now only by one month and no longer by 12 months.& nbsp;Exceptions for specific plans (e.g., “o2 Genion S without a phone,” “o2 o,” and “o2 Blue Flex”) may have different notice periods—please check the exact plan agreement here.

Legal changes, special termination rights & information on the termination letter

Since the TKG reform took effect, many rights of mobile phone customers have improved.

Anyone wishing to cancel their o2 contract should therefore be aware of the current legal regulations. Of particular importance are the shortened notice periods after the minimum contract term has expired, as well as special termination rights in the event of price changes or relocation. The form of the termination letter also plays a crucial role in ensuring the termination of the contract is legally valid.

  • Statutory notice period since the TKG reform: Contracts may still have a minimum contract term of up to 24 months.& nbsp; After this minimum term expires, a three-month notice period is no longer mandatory—a one-month notice period applies, though providers must provide a “cancellation button” or comparable electronic cancellation option in cases of automatic renewal.
  • If the provider fails to deliver contractually agreed services on a permanent basis (e.g., insufficient internet bandwidth), you have a right to a price reduction and termination.
  • Special termination rights: Price increase by the provider: You may terminate the contract within three months of the change without observing the regular notice period. Moving abroad or to a location where the provider cannot provide the contractually guaranteed service (e.g., internet: required bandwidth is unavailable). In such cases, termination is possible with a notice period of one month . Death of the contract holder: Termination is generally possible (e.g., by heirs).
  • Note: For mobile phone contracts, a special right of termination—for example, due to “no network”—is generally not automatically granted.
  • Information in the termination letter – what you should keep in mind: If you terminate in writing (by mail, fax, or, if applicable, online form), the following information must be included:  Your full name and address, customer number or contract number with o2, the SIM number or phone number associated with the contract (e.g., mobile number), the contract start date or minimum contract term (if known), and the request:
  • “I hereby cancel my mobile phone contract with o2 effective the next possible date,” if applicable, a note regarding the porting of the phone number, your signature (for cancellations by mail or fax) or clear authentication for online cancellations, the date and place of the cancellation notice.
  • Additional notes: Remaining credit: If you have prepaid credit or vouchers, check the terms and conditions—at the end of the contract, credit may expire or be subject to usage restrictions. Outstanding installment payments for devices:
If you are paying for a cell phone or tablet in installments (“cell phone financing”) as part of your contract with o2, these installments are often still due after cancellation until the purchase is fully paid off.

  • Return of hardware (e.g., routers, rental devices): For landline/internet contracts with a rental router, you may need to return the hardware to o2. If you fail to return it, o2 may demand compensation for its value.

    Number porting from o2

If you would like to transfer your existing phone number to another provider when your contract ends, please note:

    • Number porting is generally possible – you can submit a porting request even during the contract term.
    • Fee: o2 may charge a fee for this – please check the current price in your contract or on the o2 website.
    • Deadline: You should request number porting as early as possible, especially if you plan to switch at the end of your contract – this ensures there are no or minimal gaps in service.
    • Process: The new provider initiates the porting process, and o2 releases the number. Your old contract remains in effect until it ends as scheduled – therefore, note the examples regarding “cancellation as of the end date.”
