Differences between Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze
All three apps reliably guide you to your destination, but differ in functionality and user-friendliness:
- Google Maps impresses with precise maps, detailed POI (Points of Interest) information, and excellent integration with Android devices. It offers personalized route suggestions, traffic detours, and plenty of additional information such as opening hours or reviews of locations.
- Apple Maps is particularly well integrated on iPhones. The app stands out with a clear, easy-to-read interface and deep Siri integration, but is somewhat more limited when it comes to detailed information.
- Waze is suitable for both Android and iPhone and offers you a comprehensive, simply designed navigation app.
Save and manage multiple addresses
In all apps, you can save not only a home address but also work or favorite locations:
- In Google Maps under “My Places” → Labels you can save additional addresses such as “Work,” “Gym,” or “Parents’ House.”
- In Apple Maps you can add multiple addresses via Contacts → My Map → Edit and use them directly as destinations.
Voice-controlled navigation
Voice control makes it much easier to use the app on the go:
- With Google Assistant you can start navigation by saying: “Hey Google, take me home” or “Navigate to work”
- With Siri on the iPhone, it works similarly: “Hey Siri, show me the way home” or “Start navigation to work”.
Offline Navigation: Finding Your Way Home Without Internet
You don’t always have a stable internet connection on the go. Here’s how to use offline maps:
- Google Maps: Open the app, tap your profile picture → “Offline Maps” → “Select Map” and download the desired area.
- Apple Maps: Since iOS 17, offline maps can also be saved—ideal for rural areas or trips abroad.
Privacy and Location Management
Since navigation apps process location data, privacy is an important consideration. Regularly check your app permissions under Settings → Privacy → Location Services and adjust whether the app is allowed to access your location at all times or only when in use.
- Google Maps: In the “My Activity” menu, you can disable location history or have it automatically deleted on a regular basis.
- Apple Maps: Apple stores location data mostly locally on the device and does not link it to an Apple ID—this enhances privacy.
- Waze: As part of Google, Waze also uses location data, but partially anonymizes it.
Alternatives: Here WeGo and traditional navigation devices
In addition to the big three, there are other navigation solutions:
- Here WeGo offers reliable offline navigation and detailed maps—particularly popular for international travel or areas without cellular coverage.
- In-car navigation devices, such as those from Garmin or TomTom, remain useful if you don’t want to use a smartphone or prefer a permanent connection to the vehicle.
