Wi-Fi: Renaming the Network

by Johannes

You can rename your Wi-Fi network so that it isn’t confused with other networks in your home that have similar or even identical names.

Renaming Wi-Fi: Router Settings

To rename your Wi-Fi, you must access the router settings in any browser.

  1. Access the router settings by typing the device’s IP address into your browser’s address bar using your keyboard and pressing Enter. You may now need to log in with a password.
  2. In most cases, you can find the password for the router settings in your contract documents or the paperwork that came with the device. If it is one of the many default passwords such as admin1234, or password, change it as soon as possible for security reasons.
  3. Now go to the Wi-Fi settings. Depending on your router model, you’ll find these under tabs such as WLAN, Wireless, Drahtlos, Netzwerk, WiFi, or similar terms.
  4. Next, look for the submenu item Wi-Fi NameSSID or something similar. You may need to open another submenu first. This varies from router to router.
  5. Here you can now enter a new name and save the settings.
  6. Note: You’ll need to reconnect all connected devices after changing the name, as the connection will be reset afterward.

Renaming Your Wi-Fi Network: How to Find Your Router’s IP Address

    • Sometimes you can find the IP address on the back or bottom of the router.

For some models, abbreviations like fritz.box, speedport.ip, or easy.box also work.

    • If you’re using Windows, find the IP address using ipconfig. To do this, use the keyboard shortcut [Windows]+[R] to open the Run dialog.
    • Type cmd and confirm by clicking OK. A command prompt window will open.
    • Now type the command ipconfig on your keyboard and press [Enter]. Look for the entry IPv4 Address or IPv6 Address to view the IP address.
    • You can also find the IP address on your Mac. To do this, hold down the [Shift] and [Alt] keys at the same time while clicking the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar.
    • You’ll then see a list of all important network information. You’ll find it under IP Address .
    • Note: Alternatively, simply use an online service like WhatIsMyIPAddress. It scans your network and displays your IP address immediately.
