If you’ve lost sound on WhatsApp, it’s usually down to certain settings. The problem can affect both notification sounds and the audio in voice messages and videos.
WhatsApp no sound: Setting up notifications on Android
- Open the settings on your Android smartphone. Now go to ‘Apps’ and scroll down to ‘WhatsApp’. Toggle the ‘Notifications’ switch to ‘On’.
- Below this, you’ll find individual settings for chats, group chats and so on. Make sure that all notifications are enabled here too.
- Your mobile may be set to “Do Not Disturb”. This option puts your phone on silent mode, meaning that even if notifications are enabled, no sound will be played. Open the Control Centre by swiping down from the top of the screen and disable the mode. Newer versions of Android have Quick Settings for this (double-swipe from the top).
- Check whether your phone is set to silent mode in general. Swipe down twice from the top and check whether “Sounds” is turned off. Move the slider to the middle.
- If your videos and voice messages are on silent, swipe down twice from the top again and move the slider for “Media” to the middle. If you cannot find any volume controls here, go to “Sounds” in the Settings app. Alternatively, use the volume buttons on the device whilst playing a video or voice message.
No sound on WhatsApp: Check your settings on your iPhone
On your iPhone, the sounds or notification settings may have been changed. Follow these steps:
- First, open Settings. Scroll right to the bottom to ‘WhatsApp’. Then tap ‘Notifications’.
- Toggle the switches for ‘Allow Notifications’ and ‘Sounds’ so that both switches are green.
- If notifications are enabled, your iPhone may be set to silent mode. Open the Control Centre. To do this, swipe down from the top-right corner. Turn off Do Not Disturb mode if it is enabled.
- Check whether your phone is muted in general. Go to Settings and open the “Sounds & Haptics” menu. Here, turn on the slider for “Ringtones and Alerts”.
- If you have no sound in WhatsApp when playing voice messages or videos, simply press the volume up button once whilst playing the media.
This could also be the cause
If WhatsApp remains silent, you should try the following solutions:
- Check whether an update is available for your phone. You should also ensure that WhatsApp is up to date.
- Check whether other notifications are working to rule out a technical fault. To do this, also check the individual notification settings for contacts and groups.
- Check background synchronisation and all permissions. These are relevant in newer versions of WhatsApp. Also check whether the media volume controls are separate from notification sounds, as this is the default setting in current versions of Android.
- Reinstall WhatsApp.
