- The key is pointed out to you by a note at the gate of the academy. It tells you about finding the key to open the gates.

- Be careful. The key is in the territory of Smarag, the Shimmerstone Dragon. You can either face the dragon or simply lash out at it.
- Look behind the dragon for a downed mage. Loop the corpse to get the shimmerstone key. With this you can now open the gates to the academy.
How to get the shimmer stone key for Thops
You must obtain the second Shimmerstone Key in Elden Ring for the magical student Thops. It is a quest item that is not so easy to obtain.
- Our map will show you the way to the Shimmerstone Key. First travel to the Place of Grace Forum of Debate and then go to the courtyard. Keep to the left and up the ruined stairs.
- On the stairs, go left again, but don’t take the shortcut with the wizards. As soon as you reach a railing with a staircase behind it, jump over it.
- Follow the stairs up, turn left and jump onto the roof at the next railing. Follow the roof until you find a ladder to the top.
- After you climb the ladder, just follow the path. A wizard will get in your way, which you must defeat. After that, keep to the right at the next building.
- There you will see a lower roof that you need to jump onto. Follow the roof until you can jump onto another one. Follow the roof on the left to get even lower.
- Look out for an enemy with his back to a building. That’s where you need to go. Drop more rooftops until you reach and defeat the enemy.
- Not far from the enemy’s location, you will find a small ledge onto which you drop. From this ledge you can see the cathedral of the academy.
- Follow the ledge to get to the roof of the cathedral. Follow the roof until you find an open window. Go through the window and you can see a corpse hanging on a chandelier.
- It is to this corpse that you must go to get the second shimmerstone key. Move along the roof beams and drop onto the chandelier.
