Apple HomeKit connects and controls various compatible devices in your home, making it easier to implement a smart home

Apple HomeKit: Compatible devices for the home

In order to use Apple HomeKit, you need a corresponding Apple device to be able to control it. Through it, you can easily pass on commands to the devices in your household. You can find an overview of compatible devices including manufacturers on the Apple website. When buying new smart home devices, always look for the “Works with Apple Home” label to identify compatible devices.

  • Light: You can connect various controllable light sources with the Home app and thus individually adjust the lighting in your rooms. The most important thing here is that the light sources are smart-home compatible. You can also connect smart light switches with the app.
  • Heating: You can also control the temperature in your own four walls via HomeKit. This works via special thermostats that are attached to the heating. Compatible devices here come from Eve Home or Netatmo, for example.
  • Camera: If you connect a surveillance camera to your Smart Home, you can keep an eye on your home even when you are away. There are several manufacturers that make compatible cameras, including Logitech and Aqara.
  • Smoke detectors and alarm systems: In order to enable quick action in an emergency, it is also possible to pair them with smart alarm systems, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. This way you will always know if something unexpected happens in your home.
  • Smart lock: The manufacturer Nuki offers a smart door lock for which you can use your smartphone as a key. This lock is also compatible with HomeKit.
  • Sockets: You can use smart sockets with your HomeKit to avoid having to switch off devices manually. This gives you control over which devices are powered on the go.
  • Lawn sprinkler: The manufacturer Eve offers both a controllable irrigation system and a “Water Guard”. The latter quickly detects leaks and informs you about them.
  • Sensors: You can also use sensors with the Apple Home Kit. For example, you can check if your windows and doors are closed. Sensors that check the air quality and motion detectors can also be controlled via HomeKit.

Apple Home Kit: other smart home components

In addition to the controllable devices, a router and a bridge are also important for a functioning smart home.

  • Bridge: The bridge serves as the control centre in the Smart Home. It connects different, wireless paths through which the devices communicate with each other. With Apple HomeKit, the Bridge can also integrate devices that use different communication standards. This allows different smart home devices to interact and you can control them centrally via the HomeKit app or Siri.
  • Mesh WLAN router: A mesh WLAN router is a special WLAN router for the smart home. It distributes several “nodes” throughout the house that work together to form a strong WLAN network. This prevents wireless gaps and enables a stable internet connection. It also makes it easier to manage the smart home network.
  • Apple devices: The Apple Home app is compatible with other Apple devices such as the iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and HomePod.
