WLAN on the move: These options are available

If you want to save your data volume on the road, you can also use a WLAN network for mobile access to the Internet. In addition to public and fee-based HotSpots, you can also create a mobile WLAN network yourself.

WLAN on the move: HotSpots

The expansion of HotSpots continues to progress in Germany. Numerous large companies such as McDonalds, H&M, IKEA, etc. offer free WLAN in their branches. WLAN is now also free in various city centres. Here you can find an overview of the free hotspots.

  • In addition to the HotSpots, there are also area-wide WLAN networks from Telekom and Vodafone. As a mobile phone or DSL customer, you get access to the HotSpots free of charge in many cases.
  • Alternatively, as a non-customer, you can also book access for a certain period of time for a fee. Many other mobile phone providers, such as freenet, also use the HotSpots of the mobile phone providers under their own name. It is therefore best to check whether your mobile phone provider also has its own HotSpot offer.

WLAN on the move: Mobile WLAN routers

If you want to surf via WLAN independently of location-based HotSpots, this is possible with a mobile WLAN router. These are compact devices that send out their own WLAN network by inserting a SIM card.

  • The mobile router receives the Internet signal via the SIM card. For this purpose, it is worthwhile to have the cheapest possible data flat rate. A tariff with 4G is perfectly adequate for this, 5G is not absolutely necessary.
  • For around 40 to 50 euros, you can get the Huawei E5576-320 4G and the TP-Link M7200 from Amazon. Very compact models such as the TP-Link TL-MR3020 N300 are already available for around 25 euros.
  • Many Internet providers offer a mobile WLAN router and SIM card in one package. In some cases you can get a bargain, but it’s worth comparing them.
  • If you need mobile internet for your laptop, a surfstick is probably enough for you. Almost every mobile phone provider has suitable devices and tariffs on offer.
