Elster: Lost certificate – how to get access again

by Mike

If you have lost your Elster certificate, a new one is only available in a roundabout way. Fortunately, it is not impossible. We’ll show you how to go about it.

How to obtain a new Elster certificate

If you have lost or deleted your Elster certificate, it can no longer be restored. You must apply for a new certificate instead. However, some preliminary work is required for this:

  • Access the public area of Elsteronline.de.
  • First you have to delete your old account. To do this, go to “Delete account” in the menu on the left.
    • Once you have successfully deleted your account, you can register again.
    • After you have confirmed the registration email, you will receive the activation code for your new account by post after a few days.
    • Once you have logged into your new account, you can apply for the new certificate, save it directly and use it, just like the first time.
    • Important: If you are unable to delete your existing user account, it is essential that you enter a new short name when registering for a new account. The user account that is then no longer usable will remain on the Elster online portal server as a data corpse for the time being. After some time, you will receive an e-mail informing you that this old user account has been deleted from the server.
      • Tip: After the successful re-registration, copy your new pfx file to an external data carrier in such a way that neither the file name nor the file size are changed. This will prevent you from losing your certificate again.
