Flamen Meaning: Simply explained

by Flo

The word “flamen” has a different meaning in youth language than it does for the slightly older generation. We provide an explanation of the term and explain where it is mainly used.

Flamen – Meaning in youth language

Many people will think of the Dutch-speaking population of Flanders, which lies in Belgium, when they read the word Flemings. This is what the inhabitants of this region are called.

  • In youth language, however, “flamen” has a completely different meaning and is also pronounced differently.
  • Flamen derives from the English word “to flame”, which translates as “to flame”, but colloquially also means “to plum”.
  • The term “flaming” is mainly used in gamer language. It does not mean a short and one-off “flaming”, i.e. insulting. Rather, in gaming, the term refers to a tirade of insults against a player.
  • Even outside the gaming scene, the terms “flamen” and “flame” are used in youth language, “flame” being the English word for “flame” or “torch”. The term is used in real life as well as on the net.
  • If, for example, there is a heated discussion between two or more parties that leaves the factual ground, young people also sometimes speak of a “flame war”, i.e. a verbal “war”
  • But: Flaming does not always have to be associated with a real insult, but can also be meant in a joking way. An example: “My friends flame me because I give away the ending of every film.” This is then not really an insult, but rather a tease.
