PayPal: Revoke a direct debit – is that possible?

by Michaela

You can cancel a direct debit via PayPal under certain conditions. You can find out what these conditions are and what you need to keep in mind below.

Under these circumstances, you can revoke a PayPal debit

Basically, you can only reverse the debit if there is a dispute. This is the case, for example, if you do not receive an item purchased on eBay, it is faulty or a deception and the seller does not respond to your mails.

  • The first requirement for revoking a PayPal payment is that you have selected “Goods & Services” when paying and not, for example, “Friends and Family”. Only then does PayPal’s buyer protection take effect. Payments sent to friends or family cannot be revoked.
  • If there is a problem with the goods you have bought, you should contact the seller first. Perhaps there is just a misunderstanding, which you can clarify quickly by e-mail.
    • To ensure that your money is kept safe at the moment, you can report your dispute to PayPal. The transaction process will then be stopped until the situation is resolved. You can read how this works in the second paragraph.

    Report conflict to PayPal

When you report a dispute to PayPal, your money is safe with PayPal until the dispute is resolved. So the other side can’t withdraw the money. However, this does not mean that you will get your money back safely. In the event of a dispute, both sides must make a statement about the problem. In an emergency, a PayPal employee will decide on the problem.

    • Log in to PayPal. Under “Activities”, select the relevant transaction by clicking on the small arrow.
Then click on “Report problem”. Note that you have up to 45 days after the transfer to do this.
    • Then you choose what kind of problem you want to report. You have the choice between different suggestions. Paypal will then guide you through various steps. You will need to provide some information if you have not received an order, such as what type of item it is.
    • At the end you will be asked to inform Paypal if you have contacted the seller. If this has already happened, you will need to upload proof of this, such as the screenshot of the relevant mail.
    • Paypal checks the transaction, which usually happens quite quickly. Afterwards, the amount will be credited back to your Paypal account as part of the buyer protection.
