WLAN connected but no Internet: This may be the reason

by Mike

If you are connected to the WLAN but there is still no Internet available, this is often due to incorrect settings. We show you step by step what the cause can be and what you can do about it.

First Aid: WLAN connection without Internet

If you cannot receive WLAN despite an apparent Internet connection, the following steps may help:

  • In many cases, it already helps if you restart your computer or smartphone and the router. Errors in the cache will be corrected by doing this.
  • To do this, disconnect the router completely from the power supply. Wait about 10 seconds before applying power to the unit again. Failure to do so may result in damage to the router.
  • If you still cannot connect to the Internet, try connecting to another device. If this works, the problem is not with the Internet.
  • Connect your computer to the router with a LAN cable as well. If you can now access the internet, the problem is only with the WLAN and not with the internet itself.
  • Deleting the WLAN profiles can also help. You can then set up a new connection to your WLAN. However, this is only helpful if all other devices in the WLAN are otherwise working.

WLAN connected but no Internet – what can you do

In rare cases, anti-virus programmes or additionally installed firewalls can cause problems with the WLAN. Switch off such programs for a short time to exclude them as a source of error.

  • If the problem persists, you should take a look at the settings of your router. Check there to see if there are any problems with the connection. If you have no internet at all, you should contact your provider directly. Here you will find instructions on how to access the router.
  • Also check the proxy settings on your computer. You should deactivate the option “Use proxy server for LAN” if you have WLAN problems. Here you can find instructions for Windows 10, as well as for older Windows versions.
