Accident detection on iPhone 14: How it works
The iPhone’s Accident Detection feature notices serious car accidents through vibrations or rollovers. You’ll find this feature on all iPhone 14 and Apple Watch models with the latest operating systems.
- When a serious accident is detected, iPhone plays an alert and displays a message. In case you cannot see the display, the accident message is also read aloud.
- If you have your iPhone handy, you can dial the emergency call via the slider on the display. You can also cancel the process here if you don’t need help after all.
- If you are wearing an Apple Watch, the accident message will be displayed there. Again, you can use a slider to dial 911 or close the message.
- If you do not react to the message within 20 seconds, an emergency call is made. If you have emergency contacts stored in your iPhone, they will also be notified and informed of your location.
- If you have set up the emergency passport, you can display it via the “Emergency passport” slider. This gives emergency services access to your medical information.
- As soon as your device makes an automatic emergency call, the emergency services are informed that you have been in an accident and are not responding. Your location will also be passed on to the emergency services.
iPhone 14: Set up accident detection
On Apple devices that support accident detection, it is enabled by default. However, so that you can be helped better in an emergency, you should store additional data.
- Save emergency contacts in your iPhone who should be informed in the event of an accident. In order for their contacts to be informed of your location, you should activate location services for this purpose.
- To share your location, go to Settings and tap “Privacy & Security”. Then tap “Location Services” and then “System Services”. Here you can enable access to your location for “Emergency call and SOS”.
- To ensure that emergency services have access to your medical information, you should set up your emergency passport.
- If you want to disable accident detection, you can do so in the settings. Under “Emergency & SOS”, simply deactivate the option “Call after the serious accident”.
