IKEA Returns: What You Need to Know

by Corinna

IKEA once attracted a lot of attention with its lifetime return guarantee. It didn’t take long for the Swedish furniture store to backtrack. Now, you can only return furniture under certain conditions.

Returns at IKEA – These Rules Apply

Between 2014 and 2016, IKEA offered a lifetime return policy. Even used furniture could be easily returned. After that, the furniture store restricted returns so that they were only possible within one year.

  • Since September 1, 2018, a new return policy has been in effect at Ikea. You may no longer return used items within the granted 365-day warranty period.
  • The only exception is mattresses. You may continue to return mattresses to IKEA within one year, even if they have been used. However, children’s mattresses are excluded.
  • For all other products, the following applies: Only new, unused items will be accepted by IKEA within the 365-day return guarantee. However, you do not need the original packaging for this.
  • This means that furniture can already have been assembled. It is important that they show no signs of use . In most cases, you can return the furniture in its assembled state.
  • However, if the item has, for example, sustained damage during transport , Ikea may refuse to accept the return. In any case, you should expect a reduced refund.
  • Therefore, make sure to pack the goods properly and stow themso that they do not get scratched or damaged during transport.
  • You will also need the receipt or invoice for the return. Thermal paper receipts fade quickly, so you should make a copy immediately after purchase, for example by taking a photo.
  • Some items are generally excluded from the return guarantee. These include items from the IKEA Bargain Binhouseplants, and goods that were custom-made for you. These can include countertops or fabrics.
  • When returning your purchased items, you have two options. If the item is small, you can return it via parcel return.

To do so, fill out a return form.

  • If you’d like to return large and bulky furniture, you can use the express return service at the store. Please arrange this online. You will then receive a barcode via email. This is valid for 14 days. Drive to the nearest IKEA with your items.
  • If you shopped online at IKEA, return the items via the online store.

Here’s how you can still take advantage of the lifetime return guarantee

If you purchased your furniture during the period when the lifetime return guarantee was in effect, you can still make use of it.

  • If you purchased the items between August 25, 2014, and August 31, 2016 , you can return them at any time, even if they have already been used.
  • In any case, you will need the receipt or invoice. Custom-cut items, houseplants, and Bargain Bin items are excluded from this return policy.
  • If your used furniture doesn’t qualify, you may be able to return it to Ikea Second Chance. Ikea buys back around 1,000 products that are used but still in very good condition.

Refund: Cash refund, gift card, or exchange

How you get your money back depends on the type of purchase and the condition of the item. After a successful return, IKEA usually offers you the following options:

    • Refund to the original payment method (e.g., credit card, PayPal) – usually takes a few business days.
    • Voucher: Especially if you return the item without a receipt or wish to accept a spontaneous exchange offer, you will often receive an IKEA voucher.
    • Exchange: Alternatively, you can exchange the product for an equivalent or more expensive model – the price difference will be settled.
