Setting up eduroam under Linux (Ubuntu) – this is how it works

by Johannes

With eduroam, students and staff of participating institutions can easily access the Internet throughout Europe. This guide will show you how to set up eduroam WLAN access under Linux.

Set up eduroam access for Linux systems – this is how to proceed

Eduroam is a Europe-wide initiative of universities and organisations that enables staff and students to use Internet access with their own access data at all participating locations. Installation is done using the CAT configuration programme. Follow these steps to set up access under Linux:

  • Visit the eduroam web portal. There, click on the blue button to download the eduroam installer. Then select your institution (example here: University of Leipzig).
  • Select your user group. This depends on whether you are a student or an employee of the institution. Now you can download the installation programme. Since the default setting is MS Windows, click on the button “Select another installer” and select “Linux”.
  • Click on the “eduroam” button to download the installer. After downloading, all you need to do is install it.
  • Once you have downloaded and installed the installer, you can use eduroam at all participating locations. All you need to do is be near an eduroam hotspot and enter your access data. If you have any problems using it, contact the IT service at your respective institution.
