MacBook Pro: How to replace the battery

by Corinna

To replace your MacBook Pro battery, you’ll need to take your device to Apple’s repair service or send it in.

Replace MacBook Pro Battery: Cost

The battery of a MacBook Pro cannot be replaced by yourself without voiding the warranty and having sufficient knowledge. If you need a new battery, use Apple’s repair service instead.

  • Using the service, you can order a repair for your MacBook Pro and have the battery professionally replaced. To do so, visit Apple’s service page. Alternatively, you can visit an Apple Retail Store or Licensed Service Provider directly.
  • Using the service page, you can select the appropriate MacBook Pro model. You will then be shown a cost estimate. Click the Book Service button to complete the service order online.
  • The estimate for a MacBook Pro is 289 Euro (as of August 2023). There may be additional costs during battery replacement if other damage should make replacement difficult. Depending on the condition of your device, the charges may be significantly higher.
  • If you opt for online processing, you will need to send in your device. This will incur additional shipping costs.
  • Important: The one-year warranty after purchase does not include battery replacement due to wear and tear.

Free MacBook Pro battery replacement

Apple Repair Service also offers free battery replacement to MacBook Pro owners with AppleCare+.

  • If you purchased AppleCare+ when you bought your MacBook, you usually don’t have to spend anything on battery replacement. The period for the replacement must be within the subscription period.
  • A free exchange is only possible if there is a loss of battery capacity (less than 80 per cent battery capacity). In this case, there is no charge.
  • You will be charged a fee of 259 euros (as of August 2023) if the damage is unintentional. Intentional damage will be charged as for devices without AppleCare+ coverage.
