PS5: Expanding the memory – here’s how

by Tobias

PS5 games often require a lot of memory space, expanding the memory solves any problems. In this practical tip, you can find out what options you have for expanding the memory.

PS5 – internal memory can be expanded

The technical data of the PS5 shows that an SSD with a capacity of 885 GB and a fast read rate of 5.5 GB is installed in the game console.

  • 885 GB sounds a lot at first. However, the memory consumption of modern PS5 games like Call of Duty is getting higher.
  • If the memory is almost full, some PS5 owners will surely wish for the option to install a larger hard drive.
  • For a long time, it was not possible to expand the internal memory. In the meantime, however, you can expand the internal memory of the PS5 as you can with the PS4.
  • This only works with Sony’s own hardware and an M.2 NVM SSD with PCIe 4.0 support.
  • In order to install an internal SSD on the PS5, all you need is a little manual dexterity. Place the PS5 in front of you so that you are looking at the rear connectors, with the drive facing upwards.
    • You can then remove the white side panel by sliding it briefly to the right and lifting it off. In the next step, remove the cover of the SSD. The light grey metal plate is fixed with a Phillips screw.
    • Next, adjust the SSD spacer to the length of the new SSD. To do this, you need to loosen a small screw.
    • Slide the new hard disk into the slot. Press the back of the SSD down onto the metal ring. Then fix the previously loosened screw so that the SSD sits firmly between the ring and the screw.
      • Now all you have to do is reassemble the console.

Alternative: Expand memory cheaply with an external hard drive

If the internal memory of the PS5 is not enough for your games, you can outsource PS5 games to external storage media.

      • For this to work, you must install the latest software update dated 14 April 2021 on the PS5.
      • You can then connect an external hard drive to the PS5 via USB and move games to it.
      • This is easily done by highlighting the game in the menu, pressing the Option key and moving the game to the external hard drive.
      • The disadvantage: You cannot play the PS5 games from the external hard drive. To do so, you must first move it back to the PS5’s internal SSD.
