Secret Tinder Codes: This is what the dating abbreviations mean

by Corinna

Tinder codes are certain abbreviations in the dating profile that can already tell you a lot about the virtual counterpart. Some of the letter or number combinations are easier to understand than others.

These Tinder codes you should know

Tinder codes refer to certain acronyms, expressions or number combinations that are often found on profiles of various dating platforms like Tinder. Many of the abbreviations originate from English. They contain information that can be of great relevance especially in the dating context.

  • For example, a particularly well-known abbreviation in dating profiles is ONS. The code stands for “One Night Stand” and thus makes it unmistakably clear that the person is only looking for a sexual experience for one night. However, many singles also explicitly write “No ONS” in their Tinder bio – so in this case you know that someone is looking for something more serious.
  • F+ is another widely used code and means “Friendship Plus”. So friendships are sought that involve regular, non-committal sex. The abbreviation FWB (“Friends with Benefits”) is used for the same purpose.
  • While DTH (“Down To Hang”) initially only says that this person would like to spend time with new people and it cannot be clearly said whether romantic or sexual interests are behind it, the code DTF is much more explicit: its meaning “Down To Fuck” leaves little room for interpretation.
  • The code FB or SFB (“Fuckbuddy” or “Searching Fuck Buddy”) is similarly unambiguous. This model is somewhat more superficial than Friendship Plus: contact with each other is limited to sex meetings, but these also take place more or less regularly.
  • Also NSA, written out as “No Strings Attached”, is used for the desire for an uncomplicated sex partner.
  • ASL is the abbreviation for “Age, Sex, Location” and is supposed to check the most important key data quickly and without a lot of words – so the use of the code usually indicates that you are not looking for something serious here.
  • People who have had little to no experience in dating sometimes use the abbreviation AB (“Absolute Beginner”) to be upfront about their inexperience.
  • The two abbreviations LD and HD stand for “Low” and “High Sex Drive” respectively and provide information about one’s libido.
  • A unicorn emoji is sometimes used by people in a Tinder context to indicate that they are a single person looking for a sexual experience with an existing couple or vice versa. Here you should pay particular attention and better ask carefully, because the emoji can often have completely different, more innocuous reasons.
  • Married people looking for a fling can be recognised by the code MBA (“Married But Available”). Since it is not clear from this whether the desired fling between the spouses has been arranged or not, you should rather check here.
  • Complicated-looking abbreviations such as ENFP, INFJ or ENSFP stand for different personality types that can be identified in the popular “16 Personalities” test. So with the help of these abbreviations you can already get an idea of the other person’s basic personality.
  • The acronym IPN stands for “I’m Posting Naked” and is meant to indicate that the person is open to sending naked pictures, for example.
  • IRL means “In Real Life” and thus refers to things that take place in the person’s real life, i.e. outside the online world.
  • LZB is a German abbreviation and stands for “long-term relationship”. So this person is probably looking for a committed relationship. The English equivalent is LTR (“Long Term Relationship”) and is also commonly used.
  • Behind KiWu is another German-language dating term that is particularly important, namely a great desire to have children.
  • Number codes like 030 (Berlin) or 040 (Hamburg) are nothing more than telephone area codes and thus indicate which city someone comes from. But the origin can also be indicated with combinations of letters, for example OÖ = Upper Austria.
  • Another numerical code is 420:It is generally used to indicate in a more or less coded way that someone likes to consume cannabis.
  • If someone mentions Netflix and Chill in their profile, then this person is alluding to a meeting including sex.
  • You should also be careful with the abbreviation TGT – behind this profile hides someone who only accepts a “meeting for pocket money”.

This is how seriously you should take secret codes in online dating

Tinder codes let you know where you stand with the other person from the very beginning of a possible getting-to-know-you relationship. In general, it is therefore advisable to take the codes seriously.

  • The abbreviations can thus protect you from giving your time to the wrong people and match more specifically with people who are looking for the same thing as you. This will prevent misunderstandings and hurt feelings later.
  • So, for example, if you reject non-committal affairs and want to find a partnership, you should ignore profiles with abbreviations like NSA or SFB and instead give profiles with abbreviations like LZB a chance.
  • Nevertheless, pay attention to how unique the code is. For example, it may be supported by appropriate emojis. Most codes are clearly recognisable, but for more general characters like a unicorn emoji, don’t jump to conclusions too quickly and better ask.
