Curriculum vitae: Indicate special knowledge and skills

by Pramith

You should list various skills and abilities on your CV in order to qualify for a job. Some skills, however, you should better not include. Find out more about the dos and don’ts of a CV here.

Knowledge and skills in your CV: What doesn’t belong

  • Only those skills and knowledge that are really useful or relevant to the advertised job belong in a CV. If you are applying for a job in administration, apply for a position, you should mention writing, language or computer skills. Anything else, such as lifeguard badges, would be beyond the scope of this.
  • If you mention things that are not relevant to the job, it would only clutter up the CV unnecessarily and the clarity and structure would be lost. You should therefore always check whether the reader can judge whether you are suitable for the job on the basis of the skills mentioned.

Include knowledge and skills in your CV

Your knowledge and skills should be given their own section in your CV to look clear and well structured. You should then name the section with a heading. For example: “Special skills”; “Knowledge and skills” or even “Qualifications and skills”.

Next we will show how to present and formulate individual skills:

  • Language skills: A clear indication is needed in the CV of how well you speak this language. The highest level is mother tongue, the lowest basic. In between you can differentiate between good and very good knowledge.
  • IT and computer skills: To list these skills properly in your CV, you should also rate them according to school grades. For example, “very good knowledge of word processing” or “good knowledge of Excel”. Basic knowledge is again the lowest grade.
  • Job-specific skills: You should definitely indicate skills that are a prerequisite for your job. For example, a driving licence as a courier driver. How well you can drive, however, does not belong in the CV.
  • Further education: If the further education you have completed is relevant to your job, you should write it in a separate section. It is important that the period of further training is indicated.
