Installing Windows 7 via USB stick – how it works

by Michaela

If your laptop or PC does not have a DVD drive, you will need to install Windows 7 using a USB stick. We’ll show you how to do it.

Install Windows 7 via USB stick: Get an ISO file

  • The first thing you need is the Windows 7 installation DVD. Copy the ISO file from this DVD. Use the simple tool ImgBurn to do this.
  • You can also download this ISO file from this Microsoft website. However, you will need the Windows 7 installation key for this.
  • You can either find the key on the packaging of the DVD or you can read it from the current Windows 7 installation. To do this, download the tool ProduKey .
  • If you do not yet have a valid version of Windows 7, you will need to purchase the Windows version anyway. You can get the key for Windows 7 Home Premium for as little as 12 euros, Windows 7 Professional costs around 15 euros.
You will usually receive the key by e-mail a few minutes after purchase.

Instructions: Installing Windows 7 with a USB stick

To install Windows 7, the USB stick must have a capacity of at least 4 GB. Please note that all previous data on the USB stick will be deleted during this process.

    1. Download the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool and start it.
    2. Use the “Browse” button to select the ISO file from the PC.
    3. The USB stick is then formatted and the ISO file is transferred to the stick.
    4. Then insert the USB stick into the desired PC and boot it up.
    5. If the installation of Windows 7 does not start, you must first change the boot sequence in the BIOS.
