You can significantly improve the start-up process of your iMac with the help of an SSD. If you want to retrofit it, only a few steps are necessary. In this practical tip, we will show you exactly how to proceed.
How to retrofit an iMac with an SSD hard drive
Before you start, you will need the Torx T10 and Torx T8 screwdrivers. You will also need a window lifter with suction power so that you can lift the display.
- Now remove all cables from the iMac and lay it down so that the screen is facing upwards.
- Place the suction cup in the middle of the screen and make sure it is firmly in place. Now you can gently pull to release the glass from the display.
- Once you have removed the glass, you will now need the Torx T10 screwdriver to remove a total of four screws, two on each side.
- Now pull the display up a little until a small cable appears on the right side. Pull it out carefully.
- Now you have to lift the display further to remove another cable on the left side. In the middle you will find two more cables, which you also remove. Then you can carefully remove the display.
- Next to the built-in hard drive you will find a cover that you can remove with the T10 screwdriver.
- Use the T8 screwdriver to loosen the last two screws of the bracket before inserting the SSD and fastening it with a total of four screws. Then connect the hard drive and carefully insert the display.
- After you have reconnected all four cables, you can insert the display again and fix it with the screws.
- Finally, replace the glass of the display until it is held in place by the magnets.
