XBox 360: Cleaning the laser and drive

by Flo

You should clean the laser and the drive of your XBox 360 if your game console no longer recognises CDs and DVDs. After cleaning, the data media should be able to be read again.

Clean the XBox 360 laser with a cleaning CD

Sometimes it already helps if you open the drive of your XBox 360 and blow into the opening. Often there is simply dust on the lens, which is thus usually removed. If DVDs are still not being read, proceed as follows:

  • If your unit is still under warranty, be sure to use only a cleaning CD and never open the unit.
  • Place the cleaning CD in the drive of your XBox 360.
  • Then start the CD in the menu if necessary, if it does not automatically start the cleaning process.
  • Once the cleaning is complete, the drive will open again by itself and you can remove the CD.
  • If your drive still does not read DVDs, it is best to make use of your warranty.
  • Claim your warranty at the following website.

XBox 360 – Clean the laser with cotton swabs

If you are out of warranty and the cleaning CD has not been successful, you can try cleaning the laser with distilled water and cotton swabs.

  • Important: To get to the lens of your drive, you will need to completely disassemble the XBox 360. This process is not easy and definitely not recommended for beginners. Parts of the XBox 360 can break quite quickly. If you still have a warranty on your gaming console, you should definitely refrain from this step.
  • Also unplug the XBox 360 from the power outlet before opening the console.
  • Then clean the laser of the drive with a cotton swab and distilled water.
  • Soak the cotton swab in water and carefully clean the surface of the lens. Finally, wipe the lens dry with an unsoaked cotton swab.
