Block YouTube advertising: The options at a glance
Blocking ads violates the platform’s terms of use. YouTube is increasingly taking action against the use of ad blockers, which means that you risk having your user account blocked. You can try the following methods at your own risk:
- Adblocker in the browser: This method remains one of the most effective. With browsers such as Chrome or Firefox, extensions such as AdBlocker for YouTube or uBlock Origin can be installed to block advertising. However, this method only works when accessing YouTube via the browser and not in the YouTube app.
- Special apps for ad blocking: Apps such as AdGuard or Blokada can block ads system-wide. These apps work by acting as a VPN and filtering traffic. However, they can also be recognized and blocked by YouTube.
- Modified YouTube apps: YouTube Revanced is a possible adblocker. This and other modified YouTube apps are not available in the Google Play Store and must be downloaded from trusted sources and installed manually. If you use such apps, you are also violating YouTube’s terms of use.

Special ad blocking apps offer another way to block YouTube ads on Android. This method requires the installation and configuration of a third-party app.
- Download an ad blocker app such as AdGuard or Blokada
- Install the desired application on your device, open the app and follow the instructions for the initial setup.
- Activate the ad filters in the app settings. Activate the ad blocker and allow the app to act as a VPN. This is necessary so that the app can filter all data traffic and block advertising
- Open the YouTube app and play some videos to check the effectiveness of the ad blocker. Adjust the app settings as required to optimize the blocking
- Keep the ad blocker app up to date. Update the filter lists regularly so that new ad formats can also be blocked.
- An official and ad-free solution is to subscribe to YouTube Premium. This method requires a paid subscription, but offers several advantages.
