Alexa power consumption: in standby and operation

by Johannes

At first glance, Alexa, the voice assistant, has a low power consumption. But since the device also needs electricity in standby, it adds up over the year. We show how high the electricity costs really are in the end.

Power consumption of Amazon’s Alexa: How much electricity does an Amazon Echo cost?

Even if you don’t say “Alexa” or otherwise use the Amazon Echo, it consumes about 1.5 to 2.5 watts in standby mode.

  • When you say “Alexa” and feed the assistant a voice command, it’s already 4 watts.
  • If you play music with the Amazon Echo or use skills, the power consumption increases to up to 5 watts.
  • At 40 cents per kilowatt hour, electricity costs in standby range from 5.26 to 8.76 euros per year.
  • Example calculation: With two hours of music a day (otherwise standby) you spend between 6.28 and 9.49 euros.

Amazon Echo Plus: Power consumption in standby and operation

The slightly larger Amazon Echo Plus also consumes a little more power: it needs around 3 watts in standby.

  • Even when using Alexa, the power consumption increases. Here it is about 4.5 watts.
  • The large Echo Plus requires even more power when you listen to music. Then it sucks between 6 and 9 watts from the socket.
  • This puts the electricity costs in standby at 40 cents per kilowatt hour at 10.51 euros.
  • Example calculation: You can expect electricity costs of between 11.39 and 12.27 euros a year for two hours of music a day (otherwise standby).
