Canon printers: these are the most common error codes

by Michaela

It happens from time to time that your Canon printer displays an error code that you cannot assign. We have summarised the most common error messages for you in this article.

Canon printer: These error codes occur frequently

A Canon printer displays its error codes in the form of numerical sequences or number-letter combinations. The following numeric codes are among the most common error messages:

  • 1682: The number code means that your printer does not recognise the cartridge. Check that the cartridges are correctly inserted and that the protective film has been removed. Reinsert the cartridge and turn the printer on again.
  • 5011: This is a general error of the machine. Switch it off and on again. If there is no change, reset the printer to its factory default settings.
  • 5100, 5200, 5400, 5700 or 5600: In this case, there is still packing material, such as Styrofoam, foam or a film, inside the printer. Check this and remove the packing material.

The following error messages are also more common with Canon printers:

  • E5, E05: In this case, the print head of your printer is not installed or is damaged. Check if the print head inside the printer is properly seated.
  • B200: In this case, the printer or the print head is defective. In this case, it is best to contact Canon support. The printer may still be under warranty and you may be able to trade it in.
  • E7, E07: Your printer is warning you that the cartridges are not installed correctly. Remove the printer cartridges and reinsert them.
  • U162, U163: Your printer has a problem with the ink cartridges. Press the off, stop or cancel button for about ten seconds. If the error message does not disappear, the ink cartridge is empty.
  • E13, E16: Replace the cartridges in your Canon printer. The ink in the cartridge has run out.
