Returning a camera: Here’s what you need to be aware of

by Michaela

You can usually return a newly purchased camera if it doesn’t meet your wishes and expectations. We show you what you need to bear in mind to ensure a smooth exchange.

Returning a camera after buying it online

If you have bought an electronic device online, the retailer must in principle grant you a 14-day right of withdrawal. However, it is important that the product is in mint condition.

  • Condition as new does not mean that the camera must still be shrink-wrapped or covered with protective film. However, there must not be any scratches or other signs of use on the device.
  • If there are already pictures on the camera, the exchange may be difficult. Therefore, format the memory card and reset the camera to the factory settings.
  • Pack the unit as you received it new, if possible, and include all accessories.
  • Print out the return receipt and the shipping label and take the completed package to the post office. Whether you have to pay for return shipping depends on the retailer. However, most of the time the costs are covered.
By the way, you do not have to give a reason for your cancellation.

Return camera in the shop as a gesture of goodwill

different: The seller does not have to take the device back, even if the condition is still perfect.

    • Yet you can hope for goodwill on the part of the retailer: Some large chains such as Media Markt accept a return within 14 days.
    • The camera must also be in perfect condition. In addition, the receipt must not be missing.
    • In smaller shops in particular, it’s the tone that makes the music. A polite demeanour will significantly increase your chances of having the item returned. The question of goodwill ultimately lies solely with the seller.
    • You may not get a refund of the purchase price, but instead a voucher for the equivalent value of the camera. This decision is also up to the dealer.
